Exhausts; the drainage system of your car matters, when you have everything in order from the engine to the tyres. If your engine is having trouble in generating adequate power, then your exhaust might be the one to blame. Consider a factory where you are burning coal with no room for the emission of the smoke, yes, it is hard to imagine that suffocating black fumes inside a closed hall. Similarly, when your exhaust is unable to emit the burned gases into the atmosphere, your engine gets choked and leads to various kinds of problems inside.
Another severe issue attached to the exhaust is that they are emitting too much. Under normal conditions exhaust ejects a clear and transparent constant stream of gas, but when something goes wrong with it, there are chances of it leaving a trail of gases behind it.
In general, the exhaust is responsible for the emission of harmful gases from your engine to the atmosphere by passing through a number of reduction chambers that make the gases less dangerous. The gases after the combustion in the engine contain harmful chemicals like nitrogen's and carbon's monoxides that results in the formation of chemical clouds that are responsible for acid rains. Hydrocarbons are also the by-product from the combustion of the fuel that increases the overall global warming. Most of the gases are reduced to their lesser dangerous compounds like carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide by the catalytic chamber installed with the exhaust.
Any deviation from the average working results in various colours of smokes and emission of fumes from the exhaust.
Are the white fumes dangerous?
If the fumes are seen only at the ignition of the vehicle, then it is quite common, and you don't have to worry about it. When you start your car, generally there is a possibility that your vehicle has some moisture in it that is being condensed and resulting in the form of white fumes.
But if it continues with your drive, then you can make sure that your engine oil is not leaking into the combustion chamber. As most of the times, the leaks happen and white engine oil seeps into the chamber and gets burnt along with the fuel. To avoid this prevent your engine from getting overheated.
If you own a diesel car your lousy fuel injector makes it hard to cope up with the engine requirements and the result is the white fumes. It can also be caused because of an ECU gone rogue. The inadequacy of the fuel always results in the white smokes to come out from the exhaust.
The polluting black fumes
With the injection of the fuel into the combustion chamber, the engine of your car starts to burn the fuel accordingly and split the hydrocarbons into much smaller compound releasing energy. The energy then turns the pistons. But what if the engine gets more fuel than needed, yes it will fall short of its capability to split the increased amount of carbons. The result is carbon thrown out from the exhausts and hence, the black fumes. Unburnt carbon compound is harmful to the environment and therefore should be checked at first hand, or your vehicle will fail its MOT.
For this to happen your fuel injectors, and other sensors like fuel pressure regulator should read an incorrect requirement of the fuel. Therefore you should check these regulators and also the air filter of your exhaust.
The engine should be checked regularly as it may have stored more carbon in the engine than they can evacuate through the exhaust. To prevent this, you should get your engine de-carbonised from time to time.
The dangerous blue/grey smoke
When your engine is in a condition where it is going to break down, the consequence is the blue and grey smoke. These can arise because of oil being burnt by the turbochargers. Another reason for grey fumes being ejected from the exhaust is a faulty transmission or stuck PVC valve.
The smoke is hard to diagnose and therefore you should get your cars checked immediately when you see the smokes of grey and blue.
The exhaust is the system that will tell you what is wrong with the internals of the car, car tyres and hence, the emissions should be analysed accordingly.
